SPN 1073 — Engine Compression Brake Output #2

Do not driveMinutes

J1939 code SPN 1073. Below — how the fault is worded at the factory by Dongfeng, Ford Trucks, Renault Trucks and SITRAK, and what the second half of the code (FMI) means in the standard.

Dongfeng

FMI 3Short circuit to power or open circuit at the engine brake control output. Scan tool code: P1204. Effect: Torque limited, the engine may shut down.
FMI 4Short circuit to ground at the engine brake control output. Scan tool code: P1205. Effect: Torque limited, the engine may shut down.

Ford Trucks

Ford Trucks/Ecotorq writes fault numbers in its own format: the code in the table below is a Ford code (hexadecimal, zero-padded), not a J1939 SPN. It matches the standard only where the signal itself is standard, and usually matches the title of this page by digit alone.

FMI 3Connector or wiring harness defective (short circuit between AIM1 and VPSx), proportional solenoid valve (magnetic coil) defective, IT-ECU output efective
FMI 5Connector or wiring harness defective (interrupt AIM1/VPS1), proportional solenoid valve(magnetic coil) defective, IT-ECU output defective
FMI 6Connector or wiring harness defective (short circuit between AIM1 and VMGx/vehicle ground)
FMI 14Single error: Proportional solenoid valve(magnetic coil) defective. In combination with “Short circuit or inductance error of activation solenoid valve”: Connector or wiring harness defective (short circuit between AIM1 and AIM 2).

Renault Trucks

FMI 4Jacob engine brake, stage 2 — short to ground. Repair: Check the JACOB 2 solenoid valve and the wiring (A 8, A 27). Check the solenoid valve and the wiring (J 1/20, J 1/43).
FMI 5Jacob engine brake, stage 2 — open circuit or short to battery positive. Repair: Check the JACOB 2 solenoid valve and the wiring (A 8, A 27). Check the solenoid valve and the wiring (J 1/20, J 1/43).

SITRAK

FMI 0Engine brake valve #2 fault: high-side short to battery and low-side short to ground. Scan tool code: P1204. Effect: Torque limited, the engine may shut down.
FMI 1High-side short to battery on engine brake valve #2. Scan tool code: P1204. Effect: Torque limited, the engine may shut down.
FMI 2High-side short to battery on engine brake valve #2. Scan tool code: P1204. Effect: Torque limited, the engine may shut down.
FMI 3High-side short to ground on engine brake valve #2. Scan tool code: P1204. Effect: Torque limited, the engine may shut down.
FMI 4Open load on the low side of engine brake valve #2. Scan tool code: P1205. Effect: Torque limited, the engine may shut down.
FMI 5Low-side short to battery on engine brake valve #2. Scan tool code: P1205. Effect: Torque limited, the engine may shut down.
FMI 6Low-side short to ground on engine brake valve #2. Scan tool code: P1205. Effect: Torque limited, the engine may shut down.
FMI 7Low-side short to ground on engine brake valve #2. Scan tool code: P1205. Effect: Torque limited, the engine may shut down.

Can I keep driving

Do not drive. Stop as soon as it’s safe to do so — don’t keep going.

What happens if you keep driving

Time you have: Minutes

Part of the brake circuit or ABS/EBS is out of service. The pedal may still feel normal — until the first emergency stop or descent.

Next comes longer stopping distance, a skid on a slick surface, failure on a long downgrade. This is the case where "I will take it slow" does not work.

What to check on the spot

Let the air system build to working pressure and listen for leaks. Don’t drive with faulty brakes.
