SPN 174 — Fuel temperature

Safe to driveTo the nearest safe stop

J1939 code SPN 174. Below — how the fault is worded at the factory by Foton, Isuzu, KAMAZ, MAZ, Renault Trucks, SITRAK, YaMZ and ZF AS-Tronic, and what the second half of the code (FMI) means in the standard.

Foton

FMI 3Oil pressure sensor fault. Scan tool code: P0183. Effect: Fan and warm-up control may misbehave.

Isuzu

FMI 3Fuel temperature sensor fault (high voltage fault) (P0183)
FMI 4Fuel temperature sensor fault (low voltage fault) (P0182)

KAMAZ

FMI 3Fuel temperature sensor. K-line code on KamAZ-5490: MR2 11115.
FMI 4Fuel temperature sensor. K-line code on KamAZ-5490: MR2 11116.

MAZ

FMI 3Fuel temperature sensor circuit fault - Voltage above allowed. Blink code: 2-1-5. Repair: Check the fuel temperature sensor and its wiring.
FMI 4Fuel temperature sensor circuit fault - Voltage below allowed. Blink code: 2-1-5. Repair: Check the fuel temperature sensor and its wiring.

Renault Trucks

FMI 3Fuel temperature sensor, short to positive. Repair: Check the sensor and the wiring (J 1/26, J 1/28).
FMI 4Fuel temperature sensor, short to negative. Repair: Check the sensor and the wiring (J 1/26, J 1/28).
FMI 5Fuel temperature sensor, open circuit. Repair: Check the sensor and the wiring (J 1/26, J 1/28).

SITRAK

FMI 2Implausible fuel temperature sensor signal. Scan tool code: P0181. Effect: Power limited, the engine runs unevenly.
FMI 3Fuel temperature sensor voltage above the upper limit. Scan tool code: P0183. Effect: Fan and warm-up control may misbehave.
FMI 4Fuel temperature sensor voltage below the lower limit. Scan tool code: P0182. Effect: Fan and warm-up control may misbehave.
FMI 15Fuel low-pressure sensor physical value above the upper limit. Scan tool code: P018A.
FMI 16Fuel low-pressure sensor voltage above the upper limit. Scan tool code: P018A. Effect: Power limited, the engine runs unevenly.
FMI 17Fuel low-pressure sensor physical value below the lower limit. Scan tool code: P018A. Effect: Power limited, the engine runs unevenly.
FMI 18Fuel low-pressure sensor voltage below the lower limit. Scan tool code: P018A. Effect: Power limited, the engine runs unevenly.

YaMZ

FMI 3Fuel temperature sensor circuit fault (Voltage above allowable limit). Blink code: 2-1-5. Repair: Check the fuel temperature sensor and its wiring.
FMI 4Fuel temperature sensor circuit fault (Voltage below allowable limit). Blink code: 2-1-5. Repair: Check the fuel temperature sensor and its wiring.

ZF AS-Tronic

ZF AS-Tronic uses its own fault numbering: the number in the table below is an internal ZF code, not a J1939 SPN. It matches the title of this page by digit only and means something different.

FMI 8No signal from the kickdown switch.

Can I keep driving

Safe to drive. Below — how much time you have and what happens if you keep going.

What happens if you keep driving

Time you have: To the nearest safe stop

Fuel is not arriving in the right amount or at the right pressure. It shows up first on climbs and under load.

You will most likely stall out on the road, and may not restart on the shoulder. A clogged filter or water in the tank you can nurse to a shop; a failing injection pump you cannot.

This is an electrical fault: an open, a short or a bad contact in the sensor circuit. The value it measures is most likely fine. You can drive. But until the circuit is repaired this system runs blind and cannot warn you about a real failure.

What to check on the spot

Check the fuel filter and water trap, drain the water. In cold weather, suspect fuel waxing.
