SPN 164 — Injection Control Pressure

Safe to driveTo the nearest safe stop

J1939 code SPN 164. Below — how the fault is worded at the factory by Foton, Renault Trucks, SITRAK and ZF AS-Tronic, and what the second half of the code (FMI) means in the standard.

Foton

FMI 0High coolant temperature
FMI 15Engine overheating

Renault Trucks

FMI 0Injection pressure above normal. Repair: Troubleshoot the injection system.
FMI 7Injection pressure and fuel delivery above normal. Repair: Troubleshoot the injection system.
FMI 8Erroneous “driver's demanded torque” signal. Repair: Check that the accelerator pedal position changes correctly. Run the diagnostic check of the EECU. Check the programming. Switch the ignition off, switch it on again and repeat the test. If the fault persists, replace the control unit.
FMI 12Injection pressure does not match the set value — above or below target. Repair: Troubleshoot the injection system.
FMI 31Valve stuck. Repair: Troubleshoot the injection system.

SITRAK

FMI 12The FBC governor does not enter closed-loop mode. Scan tool code: P0611. Effect: Torque limited, MIL on, power may drop to 60%.

ZF AS-Tronic

ZF AS-Tronic uses its own fault numbering: the number in the table below is an internal ZF code, not a J1939 SPN. It matches the title of this page by digit only and means something different.

FMI 8No CAN bus signal: "engine torque from electronic accelerator pedal position".

Can I keep driving

Safe to drive. Below — how much time you have and what happens if you keep going.

What happens if you keep driving

Time you have: To the nearest safe stop

Fuel is not arriving in the right amount or at the right pressure. It shows up first on climbs and under load.

You will most likely stall out on the road, and may not restart on the shoulder. A clogged filter or water in the tank you can nurse to a shop; a failing injection pump you cannot.

That said, the manufacturer flags this code as critical — if in doubt, it is safer to stop and check on the spot.

What to check on the spot

Check the fuel filter and water trap, drain the water. In cold weather, suspect fuel waxing.
